Flight Log - 2023-04-02 - David Frey's Maximus Periculum

Modified with Vander Burn fins/centering rings

Added 1/2" Shock Cord secured with an anchor to inner firewall

Update:  After first flight, the parachute was upgraded to a top-flight 18".  The stock parachute was detached due to excessive speed post-apogee

Flight Date: 2023-04-02
Rocket Name: Maximus Periculum
Kit Name: Estes - Der Big Red Max {Kit} (9721) [2021-]
Flyer's Name: David Frey
Motors: G74-9
Expected Altitude: 1,108.00 Feet
Wind Speed: 10.00 mph
Launch Site: CRASH Launch Site
Actual Altitude: 1,077.00 Feet

This flight was to test the Eggtimer Rocketry Quantum altimeter.  It ran it in passive mode (no deployment charges) and performed flawlessly.  See the output below in Results.

Modifications:

  • Added Eggtimer Quantum and 2S 300MaH battery
  • Aerotech G76-8M motor
  • Duck cloth canvas pouch

Observations and Results:

  • I only had time for one flight on this rocket today, but it was really cool.  The roar of the motor gets everyone's attention. #AdultDiaper
  • I was not able to see the deployment.  It pulled an Icurus and went right into the sun.  I still have to review the video.
  • The rocket was only short by < 32 feet of the projected apogee.  I believe this rocket is definitely Level 1 certification doable since the H55W is only 76N-s more impulse.  However, if I were constructing this with L1 in mind, I would have used epoxy for the fin can for peace of mind :: Cue the glue holy war ::
  • I may give a G80 a go at some point but the G74 was really what I wanted to get out of this rocket and at $20 a launch, that's about the ceiling for ad-hoc, sport flying.
  • Eggtimer Quantum altimeter was wrapped in a duck cloth canvas bag with the battery to secure it since there's not much room for an av-bay.
    • It performed pretty well.  There were some interesting metrics with the velocities that I believe are attributed to no vent holes and being wrapped up like a burrito.  Still, the altitude curve matches the OpenRocket sim almost verbatim.
    • Since this is a single-deploy, simple rocket configuration, I will probably not drill vent holes unless I come up with another configuration ::Note to self:  Start another build for testing::
