Flight Log - 2021-09-04 - Wes Munn's AMRAAM

Building this to continue to develop rocket building skills. Continuing to test out primering/sanding/painting techniques. Just completed building my own large rocket fin jig to use to place fins on this rocket. Upon completion of this rocket kit, this will be my first introduction into mid-power with a modest start with a D12-5 Estes engine.

I am adding a 13cm 3D printed payload bay to carry an Arduino flight altimeter.

Flight Date: 2021-09-04
Rocket Name: AMRAAM
Kit Name: Rocketarium - AMRAAM AIM 120A {Kit} (RK-AMRAA) [2011-]
Flyer's Name: Wes Munn
Motors: E12-6
Expected Altitude: 800.00 Feet
Wind Speed: 6.00 mph
Launch Site: Dalzell, SC
Actual Altitude: 761.00 Feet

First flight of the day for us nd our friends, Blake (11), and his mom, Melisa from our homeschool group. This was Blake's first time seeing a real rocket launch. Melisa enjoyed stories from Johnny of how he got into rocketry over 40 years ago. My son (5) was with me.

The AMRAAM flew to a height of 761 feet based on Jolly Logic Altimeter 1 readings. This was the ROSCO Freedom Launch event for Labor Day weekend. Weather was relatively cool with bright blue skies. Temperature in the mid-80s based on handheld anemometer readout.

I also used Estes igniters dipped in Testor's silver paint to increase ignition. Previous attempt last month to ignite a D12-5 motor failed due to changes in Estes igniters.
